چکیده

The aim of the paper is to investigate the process of spatial agglomeration of innovation and production activities and to assess the extent to which the degree of specialisation or diversity externalities in the area may affect the innovative output in a particular local industry. The analysis is carried out thanks to an original databank on innovation and production activity across 85 industrial sectors and 784 Italian Local Labour Systems, which are groupings of municipalities characterised by a high degree of self-contained flows of commuting workers. According to the global and local indicators of spatial association there are clear signs of spatial correlation in the distribution of innovation activities. The econometric analysis shows that the two types of externalities specialisation and urbanisation economies are both effective. Moreover, we find evidence for knowledge spillovers since technological activities of a local industry influence positively innovations of the same sectors in contiguous areas. JEL: O31, O18, R12

Estimates of the impact of static and dynamic knowledge spillovers on regional factor productivity

We develop an empirical approach to examine static and dynamic knowledge externalities in the context of a regional total factor productivity relationship. Static externalties refer to current period scale or industry-size effects which have been labeled localization externalities or region-size effects known as agglomeration externalities. Dynamic externalities refer to the relationship betwee...

Spillovers in Product and Process Innovation : Evidence from Manufacturing Firms

This paper proposes a new empirical approach to assess the impact of knowledge spillovers on firms' productivity and demand. I consider a model where process innovations spillovers to other firms raise firms relative efficiency and technological diffusion of product innovations enhances firms' demand. By modelling knowledge capital as a function of own investment in R\&D and spillovers, I can c...

Measuring the knowledge spillovers in France departments: Comparison to a Spatial Econometrics Approach

This paper aims to measure knowledge spillovers using two methods across 94 French departments. In the first part, we estimate the reduced form of the innovation-generating equation for French departments by distinguishing the effects of R&D carried out in several geographic areas (for example from 0 to 200km, from 200 to 400 km, and from more than 400); the purpose of this first method is to m...

Geography of Innovations and Geography of Research: the French Experience

In the literature, innovation is the outcome of spatial interactions between the innovative structure of a district and its knowledge structure: innovations tend to concentrate in the locations where they find knowledge that is necessary for the development of innovating activities. Thus, proximity increases the chance of developing new ideas (Feldman, 1999). Starting from this theoretical hypo...

Specialisation, Diversity and Geographical Diffusion of Knowledge

The paper seeks to develop our understanding of the somewhat diffuse nature of technological externalities in technological space by associating a geographical dimension with the sectoral dimension. Using panel data this paper estimates a knowledge production function that allows for spillovers inside the same industry and outside, and for local as well as global geographical spillovers. This a...
